Institute of Social and Economic Research
University of Alaska Anchorage
-
The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has been at the forefront of public policy research in Alaska since 1961. ISER’s multidisciplinary staff studies many of the major public
policy issues Alaska faces, along with issues important throughout the Arctic—particularly issues affecting Indigenous communities. That work helps Alaskans and residents across the North better understand the state and region’s
changing economy, population, and infrastructure—and the challenges and opportunities that come with change. We collaborate on many of these projects with partners from universities and institutions across Alaska and elsewhere
in the U.S. and Arctic. ISER faculty and research professionals teach, mentor, and do public service. They teach classes in economics, public policy, and more. They speak to public and private groups and local, state, and federal
policymakers, organize conferences and workshops; and talk with the media. Many ISER faculty serve on graduate student committees and involve undergraduate and graduate students in externally funded projects. Two research centers
are housed within ISER: the UAA Center for Alaska Education Policy Research (CAEPR) and the UAA Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services (CBHRS).

We want to help our partners determine what's happening, what's working elsewhere, what people think, and what may be improved. We see our work as a nonpartisan public service. We conduct interviews, gather and analyze datasets, put polls into the field, assemble focus groups, and bring people together. Plus, we have all of the resources of the nation's most innovative research university, Arizona State University, at our fingertips. Morrison Institute Vision, Values, and Approach. Explore our 40th Anniversary book, which tells the history of the Institute and captures our impact over the decades.
